As a student-organized symposium, we warmly encourage all students to actively engage in discussions and take the opportunity to present their own research!
There are three ways to present your research during the symposium: the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, poster session and student talks. In your registration form, indicate up to three options that you would like to take part in. Please note that students selected for a student talk will not be eligible to participate in the 3MT competition. Students selected for a student talk or 3MT presentation are welcome to present a poster.
There will be a selection to participate in student talks, 3MT and poster session based on the abstracts (up to 250 words) submitted upon registration. If you want to submit your abstract after you have registered, please do so via email to by May 31st 2024.
We will then contact you with more information. We’re looking forward to your submissions!
Poster Session
The poster session will be held in person on Days 1 and 2 of the symposium. There will be prizes for the best posters.
Guidelines:
- Posters should be prepared in A0, portrait format. Please notify us if you can only bring a poster in landscape mode.
- If it’s your first time creating a scientific poster, check whether your institution has a template.
- Scientific posters should have as little descriptive text as possible.
- Make sure that your figures and text are legible.
- We suggest including a short abstract of your work.
- We also suggest attaching your picture to your poster. This might encourage others to reach out to you about your science.
3 Minute Thesis competition
The 3-Minute Thesis competition will be held in person on Day 2 (19th of July) of the symposium. During a 3-minute thesis (3MT) presentation, you will present your scientific project in 3 minutes. The presentation can be supported by one slide. 3MT competition is a great chance to develop your public speaking skills, increase the visibility of your research and communicate your key findings. A jury will award the best 3MT presentation with a prize provided by our sponsors.
Guidelines:
- One static PowerPoint slide exported as a pdf is permitted. Recommended dimensions: 16:9. No animations are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the 3MT talk.
- Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum. Competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
- Presentations are to be spoken word (so do not sing!).
- No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) or props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
- If you will be presenting a poster in addition to the 3MT presentation, we suggest to write down the poster number on your slide. It’s a great way to attract more attention to your poster!
- If you also opt-in to give a student talk and get selected, you will not be able to participate in the 3MT competition.
- For further tips and examples of 3 minute thesis presentations can be found here.
Student Talks
Present your research in a 15-minute talk, followed by questions (up to 5 minutes). There are just a few slots for student talks, so we strongly suggest applying for a spot in the 3MT competition and the poster session too!
